Recent projects as a Senior Interactive Architect with Blink Interactive Architects:


Redesign / Technical Publications Web Site

Problem:
Software developers were frustrated by their inability to find information they needed to solve technical problems.
Research Methods:
Content Inventory, Card-Sorting Exercise
Design Methods:
HTML Prototyping, Prototype Testing (Think-Aloud Protocol)
Results:
Created a revised categorization scheme that both reflected user goals and content requirements. Developed user experience guidelines that defined a consistent navigation and page layouts for online documentation.


Redesign / In-flight E-mail System

Problem:
In system trials, users were not able to perform basic e-mail tasks without assistance.
Research Method:

Usability Testing (Think-Aloud Protocol) of existing system.
Design Methods:
Use Case Modeling, Paper Prototyping, Prototype Testing
Results:
Task success rate for sending e-mail went from near 0% to 100%


Usability Study / Seattle University Web Site

Problem:
Seattle University wanted to redesign information for prospective students, but did not know how best to direct its efforts.
Research Method:
Usability Testing (Think-Aloud Protocol) of existing Web site.
Results:
Findings and recommendations were the basis of a major site redesign initiative.


Redesign / RealNetworks Web Site

Problem:
Site had grown organically, without a systematic navigation system or consistent page layouts.
Design Methods:
Paper Prototyping, Prototype Testing
Results:
Developed a complete restructuring of realnetworks.com's content organization and navigation system. Read the case study at Blink Interactive Architects.


Usability Study & Online Help System / Web-Based Software Application

Problem:
Online quoting system for insurance brokers was well into development, but the design had not been tested or reviewed by the intended users.
Research Method:
Usability Testing of system prototype.
Results:

As a consultant, I have the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types and design problems.

With existing systems, the biggest mistakes I see are designs based on logical (yet incorrect) assumptions about what users want. One system provided a seemingly useful interface for entering data. But users who tested it found it frustrating—they uniformly wanted a simple spreadsheet-like approach.
